The new term takes effect on November 1, 2026, following an announcement by SA Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Eskom said the extension would provide continuity in governance and strategic oversight while the organisation pursued competitiveness, sustainable value creation and improved financial performance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
During Nyati\u2019s initial term, the Board oversaw stronger operational performance, reduced reliance on diesel-powered generation and the restoration of profitability for two consecutive financial years.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The utility also advanced restructuring, including the establishment and operationalisation of the National Transmission Company South Africa and the launch of renewable energy business Eskom Green. \u201cWe are rebuilding an economic asset for SA,\u201d Eskom Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThe extension of Nyati\u2019s term provides continuity and leadership certainty at a time when Eskom is being positioned for long-term sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Marokane said the Board had helped strengthen governance, improve operational and financial performance and create conditions for a competitive electricity market. \u201cNyati is well respected throughout Eskom and our industry, by our shareholders and across our key stakeholders, including organised labour, our investor base and the wider business community,\u201d Marokane said.<\/p>\n

Nyati said the reappointment carried significant responsibility as Eskom continued rebuilding after a severe operational crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing asked to continue as the Chairperson of Eskom is not a formality. It is a responsibility that I have accepted with humility and with a clear understanding of what the country expects,\u201d Nyati said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nyati credited Eskom employees with helping move the organisation from crisis towards a position where excess capacity could support economic development. \u201cThey have proved that impossible is not a fact. It is an opinion,\u201d Nyati said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have lifted this organisation from the worst crisis in our democratic history to a point where we now have excess capacity that can be used to drive economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Nyati said the next phase should position Eskom as an engine for industrial development in SA and the Southern African Development Community region.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cEskom must be more than a supplier of power,\u201d Nyati said. \u201cIt must be a platform for growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
