{"id":46760,"date":"2026-09-29T10:21:01","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=46760"},"modified":"2026-09-29T10:21:01","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T08:21:01","slug":"russia-objects-to-sas-exclusion-from-g20","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/russia-objects-to-sas-exclusion-from-g20\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia objects to SA\u2019s exclusion from G20"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says he raised objections to South Africa&#8217;s (SA) exclusion from the G20 under the United States (US) Presidency of the bloc.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He was asked this past weekend, on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, whether the US invitation to President Vladimir Putin to attend this year&#8217;s G20 Head of State and Government summit in Miami in December pointed to a warming of relations between Moscow and Washington.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>His response included a reference two SA&#8217;s exclusion, arguing that the US had gone beyond the authorities provided in its assumption of the rotating G20 Presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a great deal that is contradictory, but I did mention that. And when it comes to the invitation, an invitation for the G20 summit, there is no understanding. You are being invited to speak with us or 20 states who comprise the G20, and they are full-fledged equitable members of that body. Therefore, when dates are set to the host state, to the Chairperson set a date. They don&#8217;t say we are inviting you, no invitation means distinguished President, you are a member of the G20 and this year we are convening a meeting on this and that date. And that is all that is our view of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;So, in my contacts with Marco Rubio, I would have a G20 summit, but for SA would not be invited. That constitutes a violation of the chairmanship function. And instead of SA, Poland was invited, how was that possible? Expansion of the G20 is only possible through consensus when it comes to discussions about, excluding the Republic of SA, instead to invite Poland. That did not take place.
