{"id":47016,"date":"2026-10-01T14:39:15","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T12:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47016"},"modified":"2026-10-01T14:39:15","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T12:39:15","slug":"fresh-fighting-deepens-somalias-hunger-crisis","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/fresh-fighting-deepens-somalias-hunger-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Fresh fighting deepens Somalia\u2019s hunger crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clashes have intensified between government forces and fighters loyal to the former regional President, who was removed from office in March.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest hostilities reportedly followed the arrival of thousands of local fighters in Baidoa, the largest city in Somalia\u2019s South West State. \u201cChildren are once again bearing the heaviest burden of violence,\u201d the United Nations (UN) Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUNICEF calls on all parties to protect children from harm, ensure the protection of schools and health facilities, and allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The violence comes as recurring conflict, displacement, global trade disruptions, drought and flooding fuel one of the world\u2019s largest malnutrition crises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UN agencies estimate that 2 million children across Somalia are acutely or severely malnourished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Baidoa, about 26 000 people face catastrophic food insecurity, the highest level on the hunger scale, placing communities at risk of famine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Strengthening El Ni\u00f1o conditions could worsen the crisis by intensifying rainfall during the October-December season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One resident, Hawo, fled Baidoa for Mogadishu after a mortar struck the family home and killed Hawo\u2019s father. Hawo\u2019s brother was later killed during fighting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with my aunt\u2019s support, I have been struggling, but sometimes it is really bad,\u201d Hawo said. \u201cSome days we eat just once a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hawo sought treatment after daughter Farhiya became listless, lost interest in food and began losing weight.
