{"id":47068,"date":"2026-10-02T08:09:12","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T06:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47068"},"modified":"2026-10-02T08:09:12","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T06:09:12","slug":"eritrea-cuts-ties-with-ethiopia-over-asmara-embassy-closure","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/eritrea-cuts-ties-with-ethiopia-over-asmara-embassy-closure\/","title":{"rendered":"Eritrea cuts ties with Ethiopia over Asmara embassy closure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">Ethiopia ordered the closure of its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats&#8217; persona non grata on Thursday, prompting \u200bAsmara to sever all diplomatic ties with its neighbour after overnight blasts heard in Addis Ababa sparked fears about renewed conflict in northern Ethiopia spreading.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Addis Ababa has accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of supporting an \u200copposition alliance led by the Tigray People&#8217;s Liberation Front (TPLF) that has battled troops loyal to Ethiopia&#8217;s federal government since last week.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The three countries deny the accusation.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The African Union Commission urged the three countries to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions or statements that could worsen tensions and undermine regional peace and stability.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The clashes mark the biggest escalation of fighting in Ethiopia since the end of a 2020 to 2022 civil war in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed.
