{"id":47155,"date":"2026-10-03T09:56:48","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T07:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47155"},"modified":"2026-10-03T09:56:48","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T07:56:48","slug":"un-releases-160-million-for-12-neglected-humanitarian-crises","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/un-releases-160-million-for-12-neglected-humanitarian-crises\/","title":{"rendered":"UN releases $160 million for 12 neglected humanitarian crises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The funding will support efforts to reach some of the 87 million people facing the world\u2019s most severe humanitarian crises in 2026. \u201cWe have 87 million people to reach, and no time to waste,\u201d UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s new funding will help us get aid to people who might otherwise be left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fletcher warned that financing alone would not overcome restrictions preventing humanitarian organisations from reaching vulnerable communities. \u201cLeaders must exercise political will to open access, remove obstacles and help us reach people whose lives are on the line,\u201d Fletcher said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Five of the countries and territories receiving funding, Afghanistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen, are among 10 where the UN has called for urgent diplomatic action to secure humanitarian access.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The UN said removing access constraints could open the way for assistance to reach 11 million people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Central Emergency Response Fund will provide $150 million of the allocation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Yemen will each receive $18 million, while Somalia and Sudan will each receive $16 million.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan will receive $15 million. Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will each receive $10 million, followed by Chad with $9 million, Cameroon with $6 million and Cuba with $4 million.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A further $10 million has been reserved to ensure humanitarian assistance reaches people with disabilities across the 12 crises.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The UN Global Disability Fund will provide up to another $4 million and technical assistance through the Inclusion Catalyst Hub.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Part of the funding will strengthen local organisations representing people with disabilities and increase participation in humanitarian responses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Central Emergency Response Fund is managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and provides rapid financing for underfunded and deteriorating emergencies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Allocations are determined through an assessment of more than 100 humanitarian indicators and consultations with response partners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new release brings total allocations from the Fund in 2026 to $483 million.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since being established by the UN General Assembly in 2005, the Fund has distributed about $10.2 billion across more than 117 countries and territories.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Fund has an annual financing target of $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;UN\/ChannelAfrica&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":43024,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[26],"class_list":["post-47155","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"The United Nations (UN) has released $160 million for 12 severely underfunded emergencies but warned that restricted humanitarian access could prevent assistance from reaching people in need.","published_date":"","news_description":"The United Nations (UN) has released $160 million for 12 severely underfunded emergencies but warned that restricted humanitarian access could prevent assistance from reaching people in need.","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47155","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47155\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":47158,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47155\/revisions\/47158"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/43024"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=47155"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=47155"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
