{"id":47190,"date":"2026-10-04T11:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-04T09:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47190"},"modified":"2026-10-04T11:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-04T09:54:11","slug":"sa-alcohol-summit-calls-for-tighter-controls-as-social-harm-rises","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-alcohol-summit-calls-for-tighter-controls-as-social-harm-rises\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Alcohol summit calls for tighter controls as social harm rises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance in SA hosted the National Alcohol Summit, which concluded on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participants called for a coordinated national response involving government departments, civil society organisations, law enforcement authorities and public-health institutions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance in SA Campaign Director for the True Cost of Alcohol Nomcebo Dlamini said the Summit aimed to develop an action plan addressing the social and economic effects of harmful alcohol consumption. \u201cWe want an action plan to deal with this challenge as civil society and government,\u201d Dlamini said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Government institutions represented at the Summit included the Departments of Social Development, Health, and Trade and Industry, as well as the SA Police Service (SAPS).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The proposed measures include higher taxes on alcohol products, removing alcohol advertising and introducing stricter licensing requirements governing the sale and distribution of alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Participants linked excessive consumption to gender-based violence, road fatalities, health problems, criminal activity and deterioration in family structures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dlamini said the Summit also highlighted the strain that alcohol-related crime placed on the SAPS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SAPS is overburdened.
