Growth for 2025 closed at 4.1%.

However, the lender warned that faster economic expansion is failing to translate into meaningful poverty reduction. Regional per capita income growth is projected to reach only 1.8% this year, up slightly from 1.6% in 2025, lagging far behind overall output.

To bridge the gap between economic expansion and job creation, the World Bank urged African governments to focus on targeted investments in artificial intelligence (AI). Acknowledging that the continent currently lacks the massive capital and data center infrastructure of larger economies, Dabalen highlighted practical, low-cost AI applications accessible via affordable mobile devices, such as agricultural tools for livestock disease detection, digital learning assistants, and automated accounting software for small businesses.

Significant headwind risks remain across the continent, including prolonged Middle East geopolitical instability, El Niño-induced agricultural disruptions, high global interest rates, and elevated debt-servicing costs, with nearly half of the region’s nations currently in default or struggling under severe debt distress.

–Reuters/ChannelAfrica–

[44
post-47376","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-finance","entry
["GET
