{"id":47507,"date":"2026-10-07T16:20:18","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T14:20:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47507"},"modified":"2026-10-07T16:20:18","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T14:20:18","slug":"african-representation-dominates-calls-for-un-reform","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/african-representation-dominates-calls-for-un-reform\/","title":{"rendered":"African representation dominates calls for UN reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the UN General Assembly debate in New York, governments argued that the UN could only remain credible if its structures reflected current geopolitical realities rather than the power distribution of 1945. \u201cThe UN exists because power requires rules, and humanity needs a place where power answers to principle,\u201d UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kenya said the principle of equality among countries was undermined by the composition of the Security Council. \u201cThe equality proclaimed in this Assembly ends at the doors of the Security Council,\u201d Kenya said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Guyana called for permanent representation for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. \u201cWe need a Security Council that reflects the geopolitical realities of the 21st century, not the power structures of 1945,\u201d Guyana said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Guterres described the absence of permanent African representation as \u201cunjust and indefensible\u201d, while General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman said Africa could not be expected to \u201cwait indefinitely for its rightful place\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Governments agreed broadly on the need for reform but remained divided over its extent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Spain called for fairer regional representation and the abolition of veto powers held by China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States (US).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Russia supported expanded representation for Africa, Asia and Latin America but warned against reforms that weakened the authority of permanent Security Council members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Operational reform also divided delegations. Switzerland and Costa Rica supported clearer priorities, greater efficiency and measurable results.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>China warned that reform should strengthen institutional performance rather than simply reduce budgets and mandates. Guyana said UN resources should match assigned responsibilities, while Spain called for greater funding and executive capacity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rahman said public confidence would depend on whether the UN produced tangible results. \u201cOutside these walls, people are not asking whether the UN still exists.
