Court unveils plan to improve access to justice

The 2026-2028 Strategic Plan sets out priorities for modernising judicial processes, increasing digitalisation, strengthening institutional capacity and improving service delivery.

The Plan is accompanied by an Implementation Report assessing progress and challenges under the Court’s 2021-2025 strategy.

The Report recorded a 27% increase in finalised cases, wider use of digital technologies and stronger engagement with stakeholders across Africa.

However, the Court identified the implementation of judicial decisions and limited institutional capacity as challenges requiring further attention.

Those findings directly informed the priorities contained in the new Strategic Plan. “The Strategic Plan 2026-2028 is both a reflection of how far the Court has come and a statement of where we intend to go,” AfCHPR President Justice Blaise Tchikaya said.

“As we commemorate 20 years of protecting human and peoples’ rights in Africa, it reaffirms our commitment to making justice more accessible, effective and responsive to the needs of the continent.”

The AfCHPR developed the Plan following consultations with Member States, African Union organs, civil society organisations, lawyers, academics and development partners.

Media practitioners, Court users, judges, employees and members of the public also contributed to the process.

The consultations helped shape the AfCHPR’s priorities and strategic direction for the next three years.

Tchikaya said the new strategic cycle provided an opportunity to consolidate progress and expand the AfCHPR’s impact across Africa. “The Plan provides a clear roadmap for strengthening our work, deepening engagement with stakeholders and ensuring that the Court continues to meet the expectations of those it serves,” Tchikaya said.

The Plan was unveiled as the AfCHPR commemorates its 20th anniversary under the theme “20 Years of service in protecting human and peoples’ rights in Africa”.

The AfCHPR said the anniversary provided an opportunity to review achievements, learn from challenges and establish a clear direction for the coming years.

The Strategic Plan and Implementation Report are available through the AfCHPR’s website.

–AU/ChannelAfrica–

[26
post-47543","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry
The
