{"id":47554,"date":"2026-10-08T10:54:05","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T08:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47554"},"modified":"2026-10-08T10:54:05","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T08:54:05","slug":"fakude-warns-africa-credit-rating-agency-will-take-time-to-build-credibility","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/fakude-warns-africa-credit-rating-agency-will-take-time-to-build-credibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Fakude warns Africa Credit Rating Agency will take time to build credibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Director and Senior Researcher at the Africa Asia Dialogues, Tembisa Fakude, has warned that it will take time for the Africa Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA) to establish itself as a credible institution.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The private-sector-driven agency was officially launched on Wednesday in Port Louis, Mauritius, aiming to challenge the dominance of the big three Western ratings agencies, S&amp;P, Moody&#8217;s, and Fitch.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>African leaders and finance experts have previously accused the Western ratings agencies of failing to fairly assess the risk of lending to African countries and of moving too quickly to downgrade them during crises such as conflicts and pandemics.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fakude elaborates, &#8220;Its not really going to impact much. Rating agencies largely are based on credibility, trust from the lending institutions. It takes a very long time for any organisation of such nature to establish itself as a credible institution.
