{"id":47645,"date":"2026-10-09T10:02:50","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47645"},"modified":"2026-10-09T10:02:50","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:02:50","slug":"sanbs-promotes-altruistic-blood-donation-among-youth","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sanbs-promotes-altruistic-blood-donation-among-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"SANBS promotes altruistic blood donation among youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says it is trying to teach the youth that blood donation is an altruistic thing to do.<\/div>\n<div id=\"x_x_ms-outlook-mobile-body-separator-line\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They say the challenge is getting the youth to become regular donors as they lose them when they leave school.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The organisation has already started programmes where they have a matric farewell function to try and get those students who are donors to tell the organisation where they are going after matric so that they can continue donating wherever they will be.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0The organisation said this at the premiere of Why Blood Matters a documentary that showcases the behind the scenes of blood donation in Johannesburg, Gauteng Province.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In SA just over 1% of the population donates blood, a figure which is still very low as \u00a0the World Health Organisation suggests a figure of about 3%.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Chief Executive Officer of SANBS Ravi Reddy says this is understandable as SA cannot be compared to Northern Europe.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The country has many challenges including that people live below the poverty line.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8211;ChannelAfrica&#8211;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":47646,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"news-type":[26],"class_list":["post-47645","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry"],"acf":{"short_description":"","published_date":"","news_description":"South African National Blood Service","form_embed":"","author":"","image_caption":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47645","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47645\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":47647,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/47645\/revisions\/47647"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/47646"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=47645"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"news-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news-type?post=47645"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
