{"id":47659,"date":"2026-10-09T12:01:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T10:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47659"},"modified":"2026-10-09T12:01:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T10:01:11","slug":"sa-premier-vows-better-asylum-directive-withdrawal-messaging","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/sa-premier-vows-better-asylum-directive-withdrawal-messaging\/","title":{"rendered":"SA Premier\u00a0vows better asylum directive withdrawal messaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>South Africa&#8217;s (SA) Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the government will ensure the Home Affairs Department\u2019s withdrawal of the asylum seeker directive is properly communicated to the public.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Home Affairs withdrew the directive, issued on September 28, that expanded the intake of asylum seeker applications following a Constitutional Court judgment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This led to violent protests in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces, which resulted in 24 vehicles torched countrywide and properties vandalised.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Lesufi says, \u201cTo me, if the directives have been withdrawn, I would slightly agree with you that maybe we have not handled the communication very well; we don\u2019t have to paint a picture. There\u2019s a public representative, but you get protests, and then you react and that sends the wrong message. It means that in some instances, you have to do something wrong for the state to respond.
