{"id":47755,"date":"2026-10-12T21:06:48","date_gmt":"2026-10-12T19:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=47755"},"modified":"2026-10-12T21:06:48","modified_gmt":"2026-10-12T19:06:48","slug":"libya-seizes-nearly-1-million-of-hashish-in-east","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/libya-seizes-nearly-1-million-of-hashish-in-east\/","title":{"rendered":"Libya seizes nearly $1 million of hashish in east"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Libya&#8217;s eastern-based authorities have seized about 400 kg of hashish worth around \u200b6 million Dinars ($934 000) and arrested some suspects \u200cnear the coastal city of Tobruk, officials said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Libya has become a major drug transit route as gangs exploit \u200bthe turmoil and conflict since 2011 \u200bwhen former ruler Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in \u2060a North Atlantic Treaty Organiastion (NATO)-backed uprising.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div>The anti-drugs agency&#8217;s information and \u200bdocumentation officer, Ahmed al-Mismari, told<i> Reuters<\/i> that Saturday&#8217;s \u200boperation took place at a house in an agricultural area southeast of the city.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8220;The preliminary investigations revealed the \u200bshipment had been smuggled across the border with \u200bEgypt and was intended for local marketing and distribution within \u200cthe \u2060Libyan market,&#8221; Mismari said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">The detainees, whose number was not confirmed, were from Libya and Egypt.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">Pictures posted by the agency showed a large quantity \u200bof hashish \u200bwrapped in \u2060gold and black patterned packages marked with symbols including a horse and \u200bthe year 2026.<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div>Also on Saturday, a \u200bLibyan \u2060National Army brigade seized more than 1.3 million narcotic pills after a firefight with smugglers in \u2060the southeastern \u200btown of Kufra.
