Rainfall arrived in late September but was too late to save most cereal crops, increasing the likelihood of further price rises.

Greater Kordofan, described as the centre of the current conflict, has recorded the displacement of more than 300 000 people since October 2025.

Markets have been affected by more than 170 air strikes, armed clashes or incidents of looting during 2026, further restricting access to food and income.

Humanitarian operations are also under attack. Two trucks contracted by the World Food Programme came under fire on October 2 and October 3, killing at least one person.

Only 26% of children expected to require treatment for severe acute malnutrition with medical complications had received care by August.

The IPC warned that as many as two-thirds of untreated children with those complications could die.

Less than half of Sudan’s humanitarian appeal had been financed by October 8, leaving agencies without sufficient resources to expand food, nutrition and healthcare services.

The IPC Famine Review Committee said insufficient survey data prevented a complete assessment, but available evidence showed conditions deteriorating rapidly.

“Famine is the collapse of systems,” the Committee said. “We are witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe, already of historic proportions.”

The IPC called for an end to fighting, safe and sustained humanitarian access and large-scale flexible financing, particularly for North and West Kordofan.

–UN/ChannelAfrica–

[26
post-47841","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry
The risk of famine is increasing across Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan as war, severe drought and restricted humanitarian access drive worsening malnutrition.

The risk of famine is increasing across Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan as war, severe drought and restricted humanitarian access drive worsening malnutrition.
["GET
