After setting the Proteas a record victory target of 421 runs in the first Test at Kingsmead in Durban, the Australians needed less than two sessions on the final day, to bundle the hosts out for a paltry 206, securing an emphatic 214 run victory.

South Africa resumed their second innings on the morning of day five, on 102 for the loss of four wickets with Aiden Markram on 45 and Wiaan Mulder on five and with a deficit of 319 runs. The pair were calm and composed for the better part of the morning session.

Markram notched up his 14th test half-century as the pair absorbed the pressure and extended their fifth wicket partnership to 69 runs before seamer Josh Hazelwood made the breakthrough. Hazelwood secured his third wicket of the innings dismissing Mulder for 29.

Part-time spinner and hero with the bat Matt Renshaw struck in the very next over, dismissing Kyle Verreynne for one, reducing the hosts to 156 for six.

The Proteas went to lunch still needing 255 runs on 166 for six. Markram and Marco Jansen put on 45-run seventh wicket partnership on the other side of the break and breached the 200 mark.

But just like in the first session, the Australians struck twice in quick succession. Hazelwood recorded his 15th five wicket haul in Test cricket, accounting for Jansen for 35 and then Simon Harmer a few deliveries later for a duck and the Proteas were staring down the barrel on 201 for eight.

Quick Mitchell Starc finally ended Markram’s resistance in the next over. The opener was eventually dismissed for a fighting 75.

Hazelwood took the final wicket, that of Anrich Nortje for four, finishing with figures six for 49 as South Africa was rolled out for 206 giving the Australians a massive 214 run victory.

The next Test is at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, starting on Sunday.

—SABC—

[20
post-47860","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-sport","entry
Part-time spinner and hero with the bat Matt Renshaw struck in the very next over, dismissing Kyle Verreynne for one, reducing the hosts to 156 for six.

Part-time spinner and hero with the bat Matt Renshaw struck in the very next over, dismissing Kyle Verreynne for one, reducing the hosts to 156 for six.
["GET
