{"id":48233,"date":"2026-10-16T15:19:36","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T13:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=48233"},"modified":"2026-10-16T15:19:36","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T13:19:36","slug":"ethiopias-abiy-names-new-tigray-government-wants-polls-in-six-months","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ethiopias-abiy-names-new-tigray-government-wants-polls-in-six-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopia&#8217;s Abiy\u00a0names new Tigray government, wants polls in six months"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Ethiopia&#8217;s Prime Minister Abiy \u200bAhmed has named a caretaker government to stabilise the northern Tigray region \u200cand prepare for an election within six months, after fighting erupted between a rebel alliance and federal troops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Tigray People&#8217;s Liberation Front (TPLF) led an offensive last month against Abiy&#8217;s government, reigniting a war that \u200bkilled hundreds of thousands between 2020-22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Renewed conflict has led to the severing \u200bof ties between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
