{"id":48420,"date":"2026-10-19T13:17:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-19T11:17:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=48420"},"modified":"2026-10-19T13:17:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T11:17:14","slug":"mbeki-urges-respect-for-agreements-made-during-sas-transition","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/mbeki-urges-respect-for-agreements-made-during-sas-transition\/","title":{"rendered":"Mbeki urges respect for agreements made during SA\u2019s transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-family: var(--global--font-secondary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">Former South African (SA) President Thabo Mbeki has described the agreements reached between the African National Congress (ANC) party and the apartheid government during SA&#8217;s \u00a0transition to democracy as a jigsaw puzzle, with every piece needing to be respected.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"x_ms-outlook-mobile-signature\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mbeki made the remarks during his introductory statement at the Truth Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cases Inquiry in Newtown, Johannesburg, on the 95th day of public hearings.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Using the analogy of a jigsaw puzzle, he said the various agreements formed part of a single framework that guided the country\u2019s transition to democracy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The pieces, he said, represented various issues including the agreed-upon sunset clauses, national reconciliation legislation and justice mechanisms through the TRC process.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cSome General Van der Merwe from the old order comes and says I have got a file on Mbeki, I am going to get him charged so the suggestion that Thabo Mbeki gets frightened and decides to change the policy on justice to save his own skin. I am saying it can\u2019t happen because if you change the policy of justice, you collapse the whole construct.
