{"id":48750,"date":"2026-10-22T11:41:06","date_gmt":"2026-10-22T09:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=48750"},"modified":"2026-10-22T11:41:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-22T09:41:06","slug":"ghana-moves-to-standardise-mining-pay-amid-local-content-drive","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/ghana-moves-to-standardise-mining-pay-amid-local-content-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana moves to standardise mining pay amid local-content drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Ghana has ordered its mining regulator to standardise pay and employment conditions across the industry, \u200ba move that could ease union concerns \u200cover a planned shift of mining operations from multinational companies to local contractors by December.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Africa&#8217;s top gold producer has directed miners \u200bto transfer operations to local contractors or face \u200bsanctions under local-content rules affecting major operators \u2060including Newmont AngloGold Ashanti, Zijin and Ghana Manganese Company. \u200bLabour unions have opposed the policy, warning it could \u200breduce workers&#8217; pay and benefits<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources said late on Wednesday it had instructed the Minerals Commission \u200bto ensure no worker employed by a mining \u200bcontractor suffers a cut in wages, benefits or conditions of service \u200cas \u2060a result of the shift from owner mining to contract mining.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The regulator has also been tasked with harmonising salaries, wages and employment conditions across the mining \u200bvalue chain and \u200bintroducing a \u2060contractor classification system based on capacity.
