As public frustration grows over skyrocketing food, transport, and energy prices, the government’s pushback, threatening striking workers with salary deductions and disciplinary proceedings, is drawing concern from regional experts.

Analysing the crisis, Dengiyefa Angalapu, a research analyst at the Centre for Democracy and Development West Africa, highlighted that according to his assessment, the government’s heavy-handed strategy risks worsening an already precarious situation.

“I am not sure that threats, warnings, or disciplinary actions will be the way out of this. What should have been done at this moment is to consult, engage, and deliberate with the people. The citizens deserve a better life, they are not responsible for the previously unreported public debts or past governance failures. Dialogue and realistic communication would be far more effective than warnings and threats.”

According to Angalapu, the unrest stems from a growing disconnect between official economic metrics and household realities. While official inflation was reported near 1% in September, basic living expenses continue to outstrip earnings.

“There is a sharp divergence between official statistics and what citizens feel in their wallets and households. Electricity, housing, and staple food products are soaring, and poverty is rising. Workers feel their purchasing power eroding despite state assurances that reform efforts are underway.”

The fiscal crunch facing President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is further compounded by a massive burden of inherited, previously undisclosed public debt. With the International Monetary Fund advising the removal of energy subsidies to stabilize public finances, the administration finds itself with minimal fiscal room to cushion citizens against rising costs.

“To be fair to the current government, the economic situation they inherited from past administrations is extraordinarily difficult. However, overpromising during the election without realistically communicating the true extent of the systemic rot created unrealistic expectations. Government is a continuum, and previous policy choices are directly hindering current efforts.”

With organised labor signaling an intent to escalate protests if their core welfare demands remain unaddressed, governance analysts caution that navigating Senegal’s economic recovery will require transparent public consultation rather than confrontation.

–ChannelAfrica–

[26
post-48756","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry
["GET
