{"id":49107,"date":"2026-10-26T20:26:47","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T18:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/?post_type=news&#038;p=49107"},"modified":"2026-10-26T20:26:47","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T18:26:47","slug":"algeria-to-deploy-army-units-to-niger-to-protect-energy-economic-interests","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/www.channelafrica.co.za\/channelafrica\/news\/algeria-to-deploy-army-units-to-niger-to-protect-energy-economic-interests\/","title":{"rendered":"Algeria to deploy army units to Niger to protect energy, economic interests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Algeria will send army units to Niger to protect energy and economic interests, according to a statement from \u200cthe Presidency this Monday, marking Algeria&#8217;s first foreign troop deployment since it sent forces to support Egypt in the 1973 war.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Algeria&#8217;s parliament approved a resolution on Sunday authorising the deployment of National Army units \u2060to Madama in northern Niger, near the Libyan border.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The presidential statement did not say when the troops will be sent or how many there would be.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Military officers have ruled Niger, a nation rich in uranium, oil and gold resources, since the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, which Algeria opposed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Relations worsened last year, \u200cwhen \u2060Niger recalled its ambassador from Algiers after Algeria shot down a Malian drone near their border.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Algeria&#8217;s interests in Niger are mainly in energy.
