Diplomatic tensions between Niger and Chad have flared dramatically following a fatal drone strike in northern Niger, prompting the military administration in Niamey to summon N’Djamena’s ambassador and launch a formal protest.

The dispute stems from an aerial attack on Saturday, October 24, in the Emi Loulou area of Niger’s northern Agadez region. Nigerien authorities publicly accused Chad of launching the drone strike from its territory, reporting that the blast killed two civilians, injured several others, and destroyed vehicles near the isolated mining corridor bordering Algeria and Libya.

In a swift diplomatic escalation, Niger’s interim Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alio Daouda, received Chadian Ambassador Abdoulaye Abdelkerim in Niamey to demand explanations. Nigerien officials labelled the operation an unprovoked act of aggression and a direct violation of their national sovereignty, while further alleging that the strike was conducted with logistical backing from France.

N’Djamena has firmly rejected the allegations. In a statement broadcast on Chadian state television, government Spokesperson Gassim Chérif Mahamat denied any involvement in the incident, insisting Chad has neither operated military drones in Nigerien airspace nor assisted foreign powers in hostile actions against its neighbour. The Chadian government warned that repeated unsubstantiated claims risk severely damaging bilateral relations, while demanding that Niamey present concrete evidence.

Both nations have since backed calls for an independent international investigation to establish the facts surrounding the raid, with Niger announcing plans to raise the matter before the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council.
