They marked the start of Britain’s “Great Experiment”, a large-scale system of contract labor migration that eventually brought roughly 450 000 workers from India, China, Madagascar, and other parts of Africa to the island.

The annual commemoration honors the sacrifices and resilience of these early migrants while acknowledging their fundamental role in building modern Mauritius. Today, descendants of the indentured laborers make up the majority of the nation’s population; their legacy woven directly into the country’s multicultural identity, political institutions, and local cuisine.

Official ceremonies and wreath-laying events took place at Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation World Heritage site where arrivals were historically landed and processed.

–ChannelAfrica–

[26
post-49745","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","news-type-general_news","entry
["GET
