African governance has achieved key gains over the past decade in economic opportunity, health, education, and infrastructure development, yet these advances remain fragile and uneven across the continent, according to the newly released 2026 Ibrahim Index of African Governance.<\/p>\n

The latest report warns of a persistent decline in security, the rule of law, and democratic participation across several nations; a trend experts say threatens to undermine broader socio-economic progress.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the findings, Angolan academic and political analyst Eduardo Pascoal highlighted the growing disparity between physical development and institutional resilience across the continent.<\/p>\n

Pascoal explained that this contrast highlights a governance model focused heavily on visible, immediate outputs, such as infrastructure projects, at the expense of institutional consolidation. He noted that while it is far easier to build physical infrastructure than to establish independent courts and combat corruption, economic and social gains remain acutely fragile without a strong rule of law.<\/p>\n

He pointed to a widespread shrinking of civic space, weakened electoral bodies, and ongoing security vacuums as key drivers behind the deterioration of political participation and stability in several sub-regions.<\/p>\n

To reverse the trend, Pascoal urged African leadership to prioritize fundamental institutional reforms, including guaranteeing judicial independence to restore public confidence, accelerating digital public management systems to curtail corruption, and integrating Africa’s young demographic into formal decision-making processes.<\/p>\n

While technical and human development metrics continue to track upward in key areas, the 2026 Ibrahim Index shows that lasting prosperity across the continent will ultimately depend on securing rule of law, protecting fundamental rights, and strengthening public accountability.<\/p>\n
