The Luvengo (also called Umtshingo) is an end-blown flute found across Nguni cultures, traditionally played by herders and in communal settings.

Originally made from river reed and now often from plastic pipe, it can be tuned with water, ...linking music to environmental awareness and craftsmanship.

The name “umtshingo” comes from the Zulu word ukuyintshinga (“to throw away”), referring to how herdboys would discard the flute each day and make a new one the next.

Mmatsheko Mosito unpacks the historic and cultural origins of Luvengo/Umtshingo with Bheki Nhleko, an indigenous musician and storyteller (Eswatini).
