Africa’s wildlife and landscapes have been filmed for generations, but who gets to decide how those stories are told? On #TheUpside, we speak to Pragna Parsotam-Kok, Executive Director of Nature, Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF), about creating space for African filmmakers to tell the continent’s stories of nature, wildlife, climate and conservation from their own perspectives. At the Durban FilmMart from 9–12 October, NEWF’s Beyond the Wild programme puts African filmmakers, lived experiences and knowledge systems at the centre of the conversation. The programme moves beyond traditional wildlife filmmaking to explore the complex relationships between people, land, culture and the natural world, including African spirituality and indigenous knowledge.
