South Sudan President Salva Kiir has removed National Election Commission Chairperson Abednego Akok Kacuol, just two months before the country’s scheduled December 22 elections. Kacuol had led the electoral commission since 2012, and no official reason was given for his removal. Civil rights groups have raised concerns that changing the commission’s leadership so close to the elections could further disrupt preparations for the vote. The UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has also warned that the country still lacks essential safeguards, funding and political stability needed for credible elections. South Sudan is preparing for its first national election since gaining independence in 2011. We are joined by Rajab Mohandis, Member of the People’s Coalition for Civil Action, a South Sudanese civil rights and pro-democracy movement, to discuss the latest development and what it could mean for the upcoming elections.
